THE FLYING DEUCES
Stan and Ollie join the Foreign Legion so that Ollie can forget an unhappy romance. As luck would have it, they become involved in attempting to smooth out the messy love affair between an officer and his fiancee. After being in the Legion for as long as they can take it, they want their normal lives back. Ollie insists on their release just as they realize they're going to be shot at sunrise for their rebelliousness. The pair attempt an escape via airplane. Lots of laughs, nostalgia, and action-packed stunts take place including a dance routine to "Shine on Harvest Moon."
UTOPIA
Stan and Ollie inherit an island in the Pacific where uranium is discovered. This was their last effort as Laurel and Hardy and was made in France and then later dubbed in English.

The Colgate Comedy Hour
A big-budget variety series featuring some of the biggest names in show business. Variety shows hosted by a major comedian were fairly common in the early fifties, but the Colgate show was different in that it featured alternating hosts. Some performers (like Phil Silvers or Ray Bolger) would only host once or twice, while the "regular" hosts appeared once a month. Initially the regular hosts were Eddie Cantor, Fred Allen and Martin & Lewis. Allen, one of the biggest comedians in radio, couldn't make the transition to television and left the show after a few months.
In 1951, Abbott & Costello and Donald O'Connor became "regulars". Bob Hope joined the ranks in 1952, but only stayed with the program for one season (1952-1953). In the fall of 1953, Hope was replaced by Jimmy Durante-who also stayed for just one season. A show of this scope proved difficult to sustain. By the fall of 1954, Cantor, O'Connor and Abbott & Costello were gone. Martin & Lewis would only stay one more seaon themselves. The last show aired on Christmas, 1955 and featured a program of christmas music.
This particular DVD includes episodes with hosts Eddie Cantor, Abbott & Costello, special guests Frank Sinatra, Eddie Fisher, Victor Borge, Allan Jones, Gisele MacKenzie and Grace Hartman. |
